Project Manager, WoPEc project
Salary: 16628-21519 pounds per annum
A project manager is sought to work on the WoPEc project, funded by the
Electronic Libraries Programme. WoPEc is an international electronic
library of research documents in Economics, comprising a bibliographic
database with WWW links to the distributed original papers. The Project
Manager will be responsible for building and documenting a set of perl
scripts to develop the system, liaising with users and contributors to
increase coverage and awareness, and supervising conversion staff. She or
he should have a degree in computing, library science or economics.
Familiarity with Unix, html and perl development are essential; an interest
in building a catalogue and enthusiasm in promoting the internet as a means
for scholarly communication would be welcome. The post is for 18 months
(subject to probation), with possible extension if funding is available.

PROJECT MANAGER - WoPEc - Job Description
Fixed term 18 month contract
Academic related Grade 2
Salary: 16628-21519 per annum
The Project Manager will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the
project, working under the supervision of the project director.
Her or his tasks will include
* collecting input from remote working papers servers and translate the
metadata into the IAFA/whois++ format used for the project. For large
remote holdings this could involve the use of perl scripts.
* programming maintenance scripts for the system. These scripts concern
the interrogation of the database, the control of quality of the data,
statistics for the usage of that system. All these scripts will be
written in perl.
* designing and creating documentation for the system. This will be
made available on the web and in print using an appropriate tool. Both
the user aspects of the system and the provider aspects of the system
need to be documented.
* liaising with end users and providers of information. This includes a
study on UK user needs.
* organising three user and contributor meetings. These will be held
towards the end of the project at three locations in the UK.
* supervise the programme of collecting input. In addition to providing
links to existing servers, the project will collect papers to be scanned
in or to the published from disks. The postholder will administer this
programme with clerical assistance being provided from project funds.
The project manager will be based at the library of the University of
Surrey. She or he will work on a dedicated PC running Unix, and have the
support of technical and clerical staff in the University's Information
Services.
