world for his book, Crossing the Internet Threshold. Mr. Tennant has taught,
written and worked in the Internet environment and watched it change the
face of librarianship.
As more and more library users become accustomed to the Internet
and to remote access to library catalogs, libraries are seeing
the value of having a real presence online. Although creating a
virtual information desk has its challenges, it also has it
rewards. This preconference will teach participants how to
prepare for a digital presence. It will provide tips on training
as a way to promote the service and get staff buy-in.
Participants will also learn about the design and publicity sides
to electronic pages from some commercial web page designers.
After completing the workshop, participants will be able to:
1) Understand practical set-up issues of cost and equipment
2) Recognize the managerial and organizational implications of having an
institution create an electronic presence
3) Explore how to organize the creation and maintenance issues of setting
up an electronic site, as well as how to anticipate the policy questions
that result
4) Determine what you want an electronic site to accomplish
5) Understand good design principles and tools to help in creating an
effective digital page.
