Systems Librarian Position
Environment:
The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory invites applications for the
position of Systems Librarian for its R. E. Gibson Library and Information
Center. The Applied Physics Laboratory is a research and development division
of The Johns Hopkins University dedicated to solving urgent problems of
national and global interest. While focused primarily on U.S. Navy and defense
tasks, the Laboratory also conducts major programs for civil federal agencies,
primarily in space science for NASA, and continues to make contributions in
civilian sectors, where national needs are in concert with our capabilities.
The Library provides its community of scientists and engineers with an array of
sophisticated electronic resources and services. A more detailed description

Responsibilities:
The Systems Librarian will be responsible for enhancing and extending the
capabilities of the Library's automated systems, installation and maintenance
of server and workstation hardware and software, the provision of technical
guidance and advice to library staff, and teaming with Library staff to
develop, maintain and implement a dynamic technology plan for the delivery of
library services.
Qualifications:
Required:
A Master of Library Science or Master of Computer Science degree with extensive
knowledge of library automation. The candidate's experience must demonstrate
an emphasize on UNIX based systems, Netware and the Internet. The candidate
must show evidence of strong organizational skills, an ability to work
effectively in a rapidly changing environment, and a commitment to responsive
and innovative library service.
Preferred:
Due to the rapidly changing nature of library systems, preference will be given
to the candidates who have had professional-level library systems experience
within the past year. Familiarity with emerging technologies associated with
Web-based systems (e.g., Java, VRML) are highly desirable.
