On July 8th the Library and Center for Knowledge Management at the
University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) released an electronic
version of The Cigarette Papers, originally published in hardcover by the
University of California Press in April 1996. Three of the authors are from
UCSF - Stanton Glantz, Lisa Bero and Deborah Barnes. The book uses
documents from the Brown and Williamson Tobacco Corporation to analyze
general practices of the tobacco industry including their knowledge of the
physiological effects of smoking and research with nicotine to ensure a
growing market for their product.

The collaborative effort between the UC Press and the UCSF Library offers
readers paper and electronic options. The online version provides direct
links to the Brown and Williamson documents previously published by the
Library and enables full text searching on any word in the text. The
publication is an experiment to test the value of publishing the scholarly
works of faculty on the web and business models for electronic products.
Subscriptions are offered on an annual basis. For the next remainder of
1996 there is a special introductory pricing offer of $25 for an individual
account and $50 for an educational institution. Educational accounts are
based upon network addresses eliminating the need for individual passwords.

The Cigarette Papers Online is located at the following World Wide Web address:
