Lesley,

Unfortunately, HTML is not as robust as SGML and cannot handle equations.
This is due to a combination of special font display and character
placement problems.

The best bet is to place small graphics of the equations either inline or
as stand alone .gif files as appropriate. You mention that the equations
may be saved as graphics, so it sounds like screen capture won't be
necessary in order for you to get the equations in this format.

Here's a final thought on this. Have you considered Adobe Acrobat? You
could simply distill the pages into PDF files on the PC creating the pages.
You can then have a link to the free Adobe Acrobat reader which is a
"helper" application for the WWW browser. The free reader is now available
for Windows (3.XX, NT, '95), Macs, and UNIX Sun, HP, and SGI (beta). All of
the equations would display exactly as in the original with no loss in
quality that you would get as a result of .gif files.

If you want to discuss this avenue further, please write to me offline.
