Never forget that an *important* part of the job is to be proactive - don't just
wait to be asked to put something up. That means looking to the
Web for providing new ways of presenting old data - by old data I mean data
that is relatively fixed, like a book (FAQ's, SOP's, newsletters etc.) or that
comes in new every week/month from a common source, so the content changes but
the format is fixed.
You should also keep a watching brief on what's going on from a technical
standpoint. Then you are in a position to identify new tactics or new
(software) applications that might be applicable to your site.
For example, check out the demo application at http://www.datatext.co.uk/ti
The demo illustrates the use of batch software to convert reference data on a
routine basis to a high quality, hypertext-linked document set in HTML. This
allows dissemination of (any) on-line search (eg enquiry or SDI) results from
a Web site (copyright restrictions notwithstanding). It's different and very
effective; it certainly adds considerable value to 'rip and ship' with barely
any effort. It's the sort of novel Web application you should be on the lookout
for.
