Edward R. Tufte has already been mentioned by name; along the thought
offered by Chris Poterala, see Tufte's two monuments, "The Visual Display
of Quantitative Information" (1983) and "Envisioning Information" (1990),
both by Graphics Press (his own, I believe).
 
These are must-reads for the graphically literate and are beautifully
produced books, too.
