Hi all,
the "Webserver on a disk" (WAD) is now ready to be used. As some of
you might remember, it is a minimal webserver fitting on a
single disk. It is meant to turn any 486 PC temporarily into a backup
webserver in case of failure or maintenance of a "real" server.
The OS and software on the PC will remain untouched as WAD operates
completely off the floppy.
BTW thanks to those who offered to act as
betatesters - no reaction means no complaints, right?
WAD does the following: it boots up from a single floppy
as a minimal Linux system with a running httpd (AKA ye
web server) and is preconfigured to respond with a maintenance
note to all the incoming requests - no more "no connection"
errors for your customers/users. WAD is meant to be
foolproof - it should run out of the box/the disk.
However, Linux/unix experts can use it for many other
useful purposes as it comes with full networking support and
- being a Linux system - can be used for network and
workstation troubleshooting.
Hardware requirements: any 486 DX PC and above
network card must be ne2000 compatible or 3com 3c5xxx

Those who hate Gif Animations (I remember the discussion...) will
kindly notice that there is a non-looping(!) animation, isn't that
great? :-)
BTW, WAD is free, of course!
Acknowledgements:
the core of WAD is the DLX Linux distribution, so if you
are interested in making your customized single-floppy-Linux
system go to http://www.wu-wien.ac.at/usr/h93/h9301726/dlx.html.
Have fun (and tell me how it works),
Uli
