recent discussion of WWW cataloging?

While we are mentioning "cataloging," "MLS," and "WWW cataloging," I
would like to point out two projects which are underway and which I
believe address this question.
The first is OCLC's FirstSearch database, NetFirst, which is supposed to
be available soon. This project will provide a searchable database with
(I assume) LC subject heading control. The records will also incorporate
links to the actual resource. Want to know more?

The second project is also from OCLC but is separate from NetFirst. OCLC
is currently conducting a project where by catalogers are using the MARC
record format to catalog Internet resources. As part of this project
there is a searchable database. Once again, there are links from the
record to the actual resource. Want to know more about this project?

I just wanted to point out that efforts were beginning to be made towards
true cataloging of Internet resources. If we were all to catalog some of
our Internet resources (and I must admit we are not doing it yet), these
sorts of databases with controlled subject headings would provide
excellent resources for accessing Internet resources and also, if
incorporated into OPACs, would be made know to patrons searching our
local systems.
Although I believe this would be a good step forward towards librarys and
librarians providing good, uniform access to Internet resources, I don't
believe that this would eliminate the need/usefullness of robots,
spiders, and search engines. However, it would provide a database of
uniform records which could be used with a variety of search engines.
