On October 11, 1995 the University of Houston Faculty
Senate will sponsor an all-day symposium on the future of
scholarly communication. The title is:
"Of Books and Computers, Minds and Machines:
The Changing Face of Knowledge."
Many conferences focus on electronic communication. This one
focuses instead on the scholarly record, the shape of human thought,
and the future of print media.
Join us if you can (registration is free, but is required
by Friday, October 6).
Conference speakers include:
- Paul Evan Peters, executive director of the
Coalition for Networked Information
- David Godine, president of a fine-press publishing house
- John Lienhard, noted scholar of engineering and history,
known for his program on public radio, "The Engines of
Our Ingenuity"
You are also invited to the Conference Web site at:
http://www.tranquil..uh.edu/mgd/confer/confmain.htm
Here you will find the Conference schedule and registration
information, a selection of background materials on the issues,
and examples of types of electronic scholarly communications.
The Conference papers will be posted at the above Web site
after the Conference. A class at the University of Houston
plans to set up a Forum section where issues related to the
Conference topic can be discussed.
