? Question about HTML

I intend to join this listserv, but I have a question I would like to 
present.

How does one use the "<" or ">" characters in the text of a Web page.  I 
have not tried it in Netscape yet, but in Lynx, the browser thinks that you 
are trying to construct a tag and ignores text around it.
