This issue includes the following: Intersections: The Economies of Open Access pp. 1-38 Publishing costs money. That's a given, although sometimes that cost is so negligible that it can be handled as departmental or library or society overhead. This roundup looks at a range of items related to the economics of journals in general and OA journals in particular, divided into ten general topics. It turns out that I have stronger feelings than I thought about this issue, so there's a fair amount of my own commentary mixed in with excerpts from various posts and articles. ============================ To unsubscribe: http://bit.ly/web4lib Web4Lib Web Site: http://web4lib.org/ 2015-03-01 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... For years, I used a badly written veterinary article that was on the website of a manufacturer of herbal supplements. It claimed to be a report of the results of a double-blind study of their products as used to treat a particular disease but it described a terribly designed study which was not even single-blinded. It had no bibliography. It used some of the buzzwords of academia and was co-authored by two veterinarians and the owner of the supplement company. It was a very good example of very awful pseudo-academic writing. Alas, the company has taken the article down from the web. Does anyone have some similarly bad articles they can suggest using? I am not looking for articles that are written just to prove that one can write badly, and I don't want one of those articles written by an automatic paper generating program.. I know there are some of those on the web. I want one that is bad but written by people who sincerely thought they were writing a good research article. The article I used to use was chosen partly because of the large number of people who linked to it from other websites. Those other sites were linking to it because they believed it. They were not using it as a bad example. -- Stacy Pober Information Alchemist Manhattan College Library Riverdale, NY 10471 stacy.pober at manhattan.edu ============================ To unsubscribe: http://bit.ly/web4lib Web4Lib Web Site: http://web4lib.org/ 2015-03-09 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... This unfortunately promoted a more binary way of thinking about trustworthy and non-trustworthy sources than is warranted, so it's nice to see this question being asked about bad scholarly articles. There's been research fraud published in almost all scientific disciplines (global warming, cloning, cold fusion), driven by those with an axe to grind or researchers who fall under the pressure to find something publishable other than negative results. Recent cases involving Chris Kyle and Brian Williams are other non-scholarly examples. I'm not sure these exactly fit the "unintentionally bad grammar" rule, but I would nominate two articles as worth a look: http://www.physics.nyu.edu/faculty/sokal/transgress_v2/transgress_v2_singlefile.html Written in jest as by a physicist as a "sting" against the vernacular of social science, and accepted by a peer-reviewed Sociology journal. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9500320 Flashpoint for the anti-vax movement. URL: From niso-announce at NISO.ORG Wed Mar 11 10:30:58 2015 From: niso-announce at NISO.ORG (NISO) Date: Wed, 11 Mar 2015 10:30:58 -0400 Subject: Mellon Grant Awarded to NISO to Explore Patron Privacy in Library and Publisher Systems Message-ID: The National Information Standards Organization has been awarded a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to develop a Consensus Framework to Support Patron Privacy in Digital Library and Information Systems. The grant will support a series of community discussions on how libraries, publishers, and information systems providers can build better privacy protection into their operations. The grant will also support creation of a draft framework to support patron privacy and subsequent publicity of the draft prior to its advancement for approval as a NISO Recommended Practice. "Awareness and interest in online privacy is growing rapidly following a number of significant data breaches that have occurred over the past year," explains Todd Carpenter, NISO Executive Director. "Libraries have long been stalwart advocates for protection of patron privacy, but as the complexity of libraries' digital services has grown, the challenges of protecting that privacy have multiplied. Patron activity data is no longer held exclusively by the library, nor is it necessarily controlled by providers themselves. Compounding these problems is the tension created by the fact that real benefit can be achieved through the application of usage data as a tool for improving library services. How does one balance the opportunity to improve services or build new functionality that might improve patrons' experiences against the need to protect privacy?" "This delicate balance is one that NISO hopes to address through a process of engaging community consensus to develop a framework for addressing patron privacy in digital library systems," states Nettie Lagace, NISO Associate Director for Programs. "By bringing together thought leaders and engaged members of the publishing, library, and systems vendor communities, this project will provide a forum for perspectives to be shared and benefits and drawbacks of various approaches to be discussed from multiple angles. Involvement of the publishers and vendors is particularly important as they have been less engaged in privacy discussions and their implications." This project will consist of three phases. The first will be a pre-meeting discussion phase, which will consist of four virtual forums to discuss privacy of internal library systems, privacy of publisher systems, privacy of provider systems, and legal aspects influencing data sharing and policies. Each of the discussion sessions will be a three-hour web-based session designed to lay the groundwork for a productive in-person meeting at the conclusion of the American Library Association meeting in San Francisco, CA in June 2015. Following the in-person meeting, a Framework document will be completed detailing the privacy principles and recommendations agreed to by the participants, and then circulated for public comment and finalization. Here it is for anyone interested: http://www.azmira.com/support/study-evaluation-of-feline-leukemia-protocols.pdf I like it because I want something that has clear deficiencies that a class can see without having to do a lot of close reading. I usually point out things like the fact that the main author is the person who manufactures the herbal supplements being evaluated, that there is no literature review section or bibliography, and the internal contradiction of a purported "double blind" study where the groups are treated differently in just about every way. Thanks to all for their suggestions. Or immigration, schools, gun ownership. You can find lots of studies about the trauma of X Bad Thing with an n of 15. That's interesting because of course people are complex and those experiences are very likely true for that n of 15. But when you increase the n to 500 or 5000 you don't find the same effect or you find that it is qualified. I find that these sort of things are often published by think tanks or as position papers and they are valued by students because there is nothing peer reviewed that is broad enough for an undergraduate paper. It's actually hard to use peer reviewed material at the undergrad level because it is incredibly narrow. The poor student is trying to write a five to seven page paper on immigration reform and we expect them to use a journal article like "educational achievement among undocumented female immigrants from Guatemala 1983-1986". Is that reasonable? Is it crazy for that student to turn to a think tank paper entitled "Immigration reform -- how it can help America"? I think not. Maybe something on the Paleo diet? Lots of conflicting research there. ============================ To unsubscribe: http://bit.ly/web4lib Web4Lib Web Site: http://web4lib.org/ 2015-03-11 From 23eris at GMAIL.COM Thu Mar 12 09:21:08 2015 From: 23eris at GMAIL.COM (Heather Rayl) Date: Thu, 12 Mar 2015 09:21:08 -0400 Subject: DATE CHANGE - IOLUG Spring Conference - Call for Proposals (midwest region) Message-ID: *Apologies for cross-posting ?* The Indiana Online Users Group (IOLUG) Program Committee invites you to submit a proposal to present at the Spring 2015 IOLUG program, "Sharing Resources and Showing Results" on Friday, June 12th, 2015 at Indiana Wesleyan in Indianapolis, IN. Please submit your proposal using the online form by Friday, April 24th, 2015. HERE is the online form. Resource Sharing is nothing new to libraries and librarians ? after all, libraries are the original collectors and lenders of information. But today, sharing is more than just lending out books, or even other items (like bike locks). Libraries are taking sharing to the next level, and we are making sure others know about it. The IOLUG Spring Conference Committee invites proposals that explore the many aspects of sharing in libraries. Topic ideas include, but are not limited to: ? Consortial Purchasing ? Open Source software ? software with publicly-available source-code for study, change, and distribution ? Open Access ? online, free scholarly literature that is exempt from most copyright restrictions ? Inter-Library Loan ? Collection Development implications of resource sharing ? Data Sharing ? the practice of sharing and archiving scholarly or scientific data used in research ? Sharing Spaces ? Open Licensing ? generally, licensing a work which allows for the access, alteration, and re-distribution of it with few if any restrictions Get some inspiration from previous years? sessions on the IOLUG Website ? www.iolug.org. ============================ To unsubscribe: http://bit.ly/web4lib Web4Lib Web Site: http://web4lib.org/ 2015-03-12 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... But I have to say (IMO) this sounds like a really bad idea. If there?s a system wide login, then there?s no motivation for the patrons to worry about keeping that information to themselves -- it doesn?t affect them personally if the information gets out and you would have little way to figure out who the problem patron was. Your only recourse if the information got out into the wild would be to change the global login and have to re-educate every single person using the system. It sounds like an administrative nightmare waiting to happen. Is there no way to tie this to their library card numbers and authenticate them as individuals? It would be trivial for anyone to retrieve that information, but you would be able to change it at any time without the need to pass the new credentials along to every single patron. You could also use geolocation, limiting access to IPs within your service area, but patrons traveling or using an ISP located outside that area would be locked out. I'm going to have to echo the sentiment of the other posters. If you could be subject to fees, penalties, or even litigation if non-members gain access to your e-resources, a universal password is A Very Bad Idea. The Library then announced in November 2012 the proposed model, called BIBFRAME. Since then, the library world is moving from mainly theorizing about the BIBFRAME model to attempts to implement practical experimentation and testing. This experimentation is iterative, and continues to shape the model so that it?s stable enough and broadly acceptable enough for adoption. In this webinar, several institutions will share their progress in experimenting with BIBFRAME within their library system. They will discuss the existing, developing, and planned projects happening at their institutions. Challenges and opportunities in exploring and implementing BIBFRAME in their institutions will be discussed as well. Topics and speakers are: ? *Experimental Mode: The National Library of Medicine and experiences with BIBFRAME* ? *Nancy Fallgren*, Metadata Specialist Librarian, National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health, US Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) ? *Exploring BIBFRAME at a Small Academic Library* ? *Jeremy Nelson*, Metadata and Systems Librarian, Colorado College ? *Linked Data for Libraries (LD4L)* ? *Nancy Lorimer*, Head, Metadata Dept, Stanford University Libraries *REGISTRATION* Registration is per site (access for one computer) and closes at 12:00 pm Eastern on APRIL 8. The work agenda of the DCMI community is broad and inclusive of all aspects of innovation in metadata design, implementation and best practices. While the work of the Initiative progresses throughout the year, the annual meeting and conference provide the opportunity for DCMI "citizens" as well as newcomers, students, apprentices, and early career professionals to gather face-to-face to share experiences and knowledge. In addition, the gathering provides public- and private-sector initiatives beyond DCMI that are doing significant metadata work to come together to compare notes and cast a broader light into their particular metadata work silos. Through such a gathering of the metadata communities, DCMI advances its "first goal" of promoting metadata interoperability and harmonization. This year, the annual meeting and conference are being hosted by the Universidade Estadual Paulista--S?o Paulo State University (UNESP) and held in S?o Paulo, Brazil. *=================* *Conference Organizers:* --*Universidade Estadual Paulista*--S?o Paulo State University (UNESP) --*Dublin Core Metadata Initiative* (DCMI) *=================* *Conference Chairs:* --Pl?cida Santos, Professor & Conference Chair Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP), Brazil --Mariana Curado Malta, Chair, Program Committee CEISE/ISCAP - Polytechnic of Oporto, Portugal Algoritmi Center - University of Minho, Portugal --Silvana Borsetti Gregorio Vidotti, Professor Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP), Brazil --Fl?via Maria Bastos, CGB Coordinator General Coordination of Libraries Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP), Brazil ============================ To unsubscribe: http://bit.ly/web4lib Web4Lib Web Site: http://web4lib.org/ 2015-03-16 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... In order to repeat an earlier study, to apply data from an earlier study to a new model, we need to be able to precisely identify the very subset of data used. While verbal descriptions of how the subset was created (e.g. by providing selected attribute ranges and time intervals) are hardly precise enough and do not support automated handling, keeping redundant copies of the data in question does not scale up to the big data settings encountered in many disciplines today. Furthermore, we need to be able to handle situations where new data gets added or existing data gets corrected or otherwise modified over time. Conventional approaches, such as assigning persistent identifiers to entire data sets or individual subsets or data items, are thus not sufficient. In this webinar, Andreas Rauber will review the challenges identified above and discuss solutions that are currently elaborated within the context of the working group of the Research Data Alliance (RDA) on Data Citation: Making Dynamic Data Citeable. The approach is based on versioned and time-stamped data sources, with persistent identifiers being assigned to the time-stamped queries/expressions that are used for creating the subset of data. We will further review results from the first pilots evaluating the approach. *ABOUT THE PRESENTER:* Andreas Rauber is Associate Professor at the Department of Software Technology and Interactive Systems (IFS ) at the Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien ). He furthermore is president of AARIT , the Austrian Association for Research in IT and a Key Researcher at Secure Business Austria (SBA-Research). He is co-chairing the RDA Working Group on Data Citation together with Ari Asmi and Dieter van Uytvanck. He received his MSc and PhD in Computer Science from the Vienna University of Technology in 1997 and 2000, respectively. In 2001 he joined the National Research Council of Italy (CNR) in Pisa as an ERCIM Research Fellow, followed by an ERCIM Research position at the French National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control (INRIA), at Rocquencourt, France, in 2002. One option is to use a fax server and one option is to connect it to a phone jack. Our concern would be how to recapture the cost from the patron. Do any of you do this? How? Thanks. We installed it a couple years ago, from Fax24 , and we're so glad to have gotten out of the business of mediating between the user and the equipment. It's so much easier. And we get a little back each month, like a commission. Happy to answer questions off the list, if you like.
