From revacek at UH.EDU Sun Aug 2 11:07:52 2015 From: revacek at UH.EDU (Vacek, Rachel E) Date: Sun, 2 Aug 2015 10:07:52 -0500 Subject: Survey on professional development needs Message-ID: I'm serving on the Library Academy Advisory Board for the following project, and we are seeking input from academic/research library professionals. The New Media Consortium (NMC) was recently awarded a planning grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), under the Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program. For this Collaborative Planning Grant, the NMC is partnering with CNI (Coalition for Networked Information) to assess the need for online professional development for academic and research library professionals. The goal is to identify sector-wide needs for in-service training for academic and research libraries that could be met with with high-quality online offerings. If the need is clear, the next steps are to develop a plan to deliver such training, and seek funding to design curricula and approaches that can be delivered to participants in any US academic or research library for free. We hope that you will lend your perspectives to this survey and give us feedback about your professional development needs. We estimate that it will take about 20-25 minutes to complete this survey. https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/arlsurvey1 Thanks, Rachel Vacek, Head of Web Services University of Houston M.D. Anderson Library 4333 University Drive Houston, TX 77204-2000 713-743-5820 revacek at uh.edu Rachel Vacek, Past President, 2015-2016 Library & Information Technology Association http://lita.org ============================ To unsubscribe: http://bit.ly/web4lib Web4Lib Web Site: http://web4lib.org/ 2015-08-02 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... However, many MP3 players and cameras are not able to connect to a PC or to the Internet wirelessly. If we grant access to the USB ports of our PCs we would probably have to password protect the boot-up process, otherwise people will be able to boot up the PC from a USB pen. In this four-week course, you will learn how to write web copy that is succinct, understandable, and engaging. You will discover how users read online and the importance of focusing on your essential messages, using space effectively, and treating your website as a conversation with your users. You will learn how to establish a consistent voice and tone, and how to use such techniques as layering information, exploiting the power of parallelism, making good use of links, and keeping active space in your content. You will also learn how to best use bulleted and numbered lists and tables in presenting your web content, as well as the importance of producing alternative text for visually impaired users. Through examples, activities and hands-on practice, you will hone your skills in writing using active voice, straightforward sentences, and cutting unnecessary words. This course can be taken as one of six courses needed to earn our Certificate in User Experience (UX), but can be taken as a stand-alone course as well. Nicole Capdarest-Arest is the Clinical Librarian at Stanford University and past Emerging Technologies Librarian at the Arizona Health Sciences Library. She specializes in clinical knowledge services; emerging technologies in academic health sciences libraries; website usability, development and management; online tools to enhance library services; mobile health; and health informatics. This is an online class that is taught asynchronously, meaning that participants do the work on their own time as their schedules allow. The class does not meet together at any particular times, although the instructor may set up optional sychronous chat sessions. Instruction includes readings and assignments in one-week segments. Class participation is in an online forum environment. You can register in this course through the first week of instruction. The "Register" button on the website goes to our credit card payment gateway, which may be used with personal or institutional credit cards. (Be sure to use the appropriate billing address). Some kinds of questions that the report helps its readers to answer are: how much staff time are libraries devoting to open access initiatives and specifically to efforts to education faculty and administration about them? How successful have they been? How have they reached out? To what percentage of faculties have library OA experts made presentations at faculty meetings? How many talks or addresses have they made? What have been their most effective arguments? Are some faculties more sympathetic than others? What kind of open access initiatives are libraries developing? How many are publishing their own OA journals? How do they go about obtaining publication permissions? How much staff time is expended in the permissions process? How have statistical reports on digital repository use been received by faculty? Have the reports enhanced cooperation? What has been the impact of the OA program on the college?s scholarly reputation? Just a few of the report?s many findings are that: ? The three year average for the number of formal talks or demonstrations given to faculty about open access was 22 for public colleges in the sample versus 8 for private colleges. ? Four year schools in the sample made presentations about open access to a mean of 16% of subject faculties at their institutions though a few colleges accounted for much of the activity and the median percentage of faculties reached was only 3%. ? Forty four percent of surveyed libraries have sponsored lunches, dinners, coffee hours, or other social events to familiarize faculty with open access. ? Private colleges in the sample have reached out to 19% of their subject faculties at departmental meetings with talks to explain the advantages of various open access initiatives. ? Schools with a mean annual tuition level of more than $30,000 averaged 765 hours of staff time spent on reaching out to faculty about open access initiatives; the median was 100 hours. The purpose of it is dividing publications in three categories, 2,1, and 0 The numbers are by importance, 2 have the highest impact factor, 1 the lesser impact factor and 0 - little importance. When a researcher gets a paper published in level 2 journals then the institutions get high research grants, level one lover grants and level zero - forget it. I guess what you patron is looking for are the level 2 journals? As for inclusion it it done by advisory commitees for the different subject areas, and user can suggest new journal. Crtieria is among other things impact factor compared to other journals in the same subject area. The list is - or was last time I looked - online, I will look for it.
