All,

I am so grateful for all of the replies I received Monday-Tuesday regarding
my request (immediately below). I have summarized all responses below. I
will enjoy seeing all of these as we make plans to do our own video.

Again, thanks. What a great forum!

All,

I am interested in creating a promotional video that highlights our library
and its services/features, and I’m looking for some good examples to give
me some ideas. If your library has done such a promo, please share a link
with me. It could be something like following a student (actor) as she uses
certain library services with voice over explanations, or maybe an upbeat
“commercial” with background music, that simply highlights our services—I
don’t know. I have the staff and equipment to do something nice, but they
are telling me to give them some ideas on what I want, in order to get
started.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Hi David

Have a look at "animoto".

We used it for this.

I am a videographer that has done web content for public and private sector
organizations. My suggestion would be for you to collaborate with your
marketing team on the overall messages/story you want to tell. From there
you can decide what the right content/tone is based on your target
audience. I realize this is more strategic advice than tactical examples
(which is what you asked for), but hopefully it's helpful.

Your quality depends on your budget and the creativity within your group.

Story boarding as a deliverable is a good idea before any material or
prototype is created.

Example 1: http://youtu.be/xhBYGI6Tfzo

Example 2: http://youtu.be/asYUI0l6EtE

Direction (use if you like, its only one idea)

0. Gather information you want to use, only 3 things to remember

1. Have your department create a script and story

2. Script read with many voices like Example 2

3. Show services with locations in a map like Example 1

4. Use screenshots instead of video recording a person using it

Float your video everywhere, facebook, youtube and other social sites.

The more quality you bring probably will get more people to come see you.

Here is a link to a UTK Libraries tour made by students. Concept Is good;
not all of the information is accurate, but it is a good starting point.

We have a video tour (5 minutes in length) on our website. It is hosted on
our youtube chanel and is plugged into our website:

Both of these examples are about our library, but neither was done by us.
The first one was done by a Journalism student, for a class project at the
University of Oregon, and the second was done more recently by the Eugene
Public Library Foundation, our major fundraising support organization.

My library made the following to promote our library to teens:

This might give you some ideas!

My local public library (with whom I am not affiliated :)) recently had a
pretty nice promotional video done for them:

Of course, you've probably seen some of the funny ones, like the student
pretending to be the Old Spice guy (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ArIj236UHs)? I can't find it, but there was
a college that did a murder mystery-themed video, which was a neat idea--if
you are very excited about that idea, I'll try harder to find the existing
one for you. And I'm not sure NYPL really had a lot to do with this one,
planning-wise, but Improv Everywhere did a Ghostbusters-themed prank, which
was caught on video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKB7zfopiUA.

Back in December 2007 Copenhagen Business School Library produced four
videos for marketing purposes. The main target was our foreign students. We
did that in cooperation with a small video production company.

Library staff members wrote the manuscript. The rule was: maximum one page
of text. This type of video must not last longer than 1,5 minute. Are they
longer people will lose interest in them. So instead of one long video we
produced four short videos. Each with focus on a specific subject or
service.

The production company did all the shooting, editing, practical stuff,
found the actor etc. The worked very well. They have all the professional
equipment and software and could find a solution to much of the technical
apects.

They videos are four years old now and a bit outdated. So we have to think
of a way to update them. Maybe ask the company to edit them down to two
videos.

The videos can found on our YouTube channel:

I saw your question regarding promotion videos for libraries on Web4Lib.

At Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, we did this video last year
in connection to hosting the IFLA conference in Gothenburg.
