 External Description:

Library Information Technology Services (LITS) serves the Tisch Library community (patrons & staff). LITS supports the hardware, software, web, network and training needs of the library. The department is also responsible for keeping abreast of current technology, in order to provide recommendations for advancements, changes, updates and upgrades in library systems and services.

Under the direction of the Manager of Library Information Technology Services, the Web Developer has primary responsibility for the development, configuration, and maintenance of the library web content management system, Drupal, serving public-facing library websites, a staff intranet portal, and anticipated project web sites. Using HTML, PHP, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, SQL Databases, AJAX, XML, Drupal modules, and other technologies, the Web Developer creates dynamic database-based applications to meet departmental as well as user needs. The Web Developer develops custom modules and web services to provide new functionality for the content management system including integration with other services such as library systems and the campus learning management system, Sakai.

The Web Developer actively participates in all phases of web site and application development including requirements definition, analysis, contributions to design and layout, coding, documentation, testing, implementation, and training. Good communications skills are required, as this position works closely with members of other departments to identify and prototype new applications and extensions of current applications. This position serves as a member of the Web Services Team, which works to identify unmet needs of library users, and chart a direction for web services at Tisch Library.

The Web Developer generates reports of website usage statistics in Google Analytics and seeks strategies for continual performance tuning of the service allowing for robust data assessment, develops search engine optimization strategies to enhance availability of Tisch websites and resources on the open web, and ensures website application security, including implementing measures to prevent unauthorized use and modification.

The Web Developer keeps abreast of emerging technologies, standards, and best practices, assessing their potential to enhance the Tisch Library web presence.

The Web Developer also assists other members of the LITS team providing backup support for hardware, software and related training needs of the Tisch Library. This will include making recommendations, performing installations, testing and troubleshooting.

Basic Requirements:

  *   B.S in Computer Science or B.S. in other degree plus sufficient relevant experience
  *   One to three (1-3) years of professional web development experience
  *   Demonstrated experience in web site/application creation and management
  *   Strong experience with contemporary and emerging web technologies, standards, and programming languages, such as: HTML, PHP, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, AJAX, SQL Databases (MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, etc.), XML
  *   Flexibility and the eagerness to learn constantly and quickly
  *   Working knowledge of website application security, including the implementation of measures to prevent unauthorized use and modification.
  *   Experience with search engine optimization and website statistics analysis solutions.
  *   Excellent time management skills, including the capacity to work independently on complex projects with minimal supervision

Preferred Qualifications:

  *   Previous experience building websites and applications in Drupal
  *   Previous experience creating and/or optimizing web applications for mobile devices.
  *   Experience working with source code repository solutions such as Git, CVS, or SVN.
  *   Knowledge of Apache, Tomcat, Jetty, Solr
  *   Strong oral and written communication skills
  *   Knowledge and experience working with or in libraries
  *   Instructional experience
