Many thanks to everyone who responded to my questions regarding scanners for public use. Hope this is helpful:

In order to gather information regarding purchasing a scanner for public use, I put a survey on 3 listservs: the Nassau County Library Association, the Innovative Interfaces Users Group, and The Web4Lib electronic discussion which is for the discussion of issues relating to the creation, management, and support of library-based World-Wide Web servers, services, and applications.
Survey:
1. Do you have a scanner for public use?
2. What is the configuration? For example: standalone, attached to dedicated workstation, etc
3. What is the functionality of the scanner? For example: save to flash, email, Google Docs, etc
4. Do you charge for the scans? If so how much?
I received responses from 14 libraries—9 public and 5 academic.
Question 1: All 14 who replied have public scanners. I also received a request that I share the results from a local library director who is contemplating the purchase of scanner.
Question 2: Standalone configuration: 5 libraries: Attached to dedicated workstation: 8 libraries. Unspecified: 1 library
Question 3: Save to flash: 8 libraries; Email: 10 libraries; Unspecified: 1 library
Question 4: Charge for scan: 1 academic library (5 cents); No charge for scan: 13 libraries
Scanner vendors: CCP Solutions: 4 libraries (“Great scanner.” “Easy to use.” “Green option.”); Xerox: 1 library; Canon: 1 library; Epson: 3 libraries (“Patrons are thrilled with it.”); Samsung: 1 library; Bizhub Color Photocopier 1 Library (“Librarians do the scan. They save to flash or email account.”) i2s e-scan: 1 library ( available in Europe); Unspecified: 2 libraries.
Kind regards,
Janet Fine

Hi Everyone,

We are researching the purchase of a flatbed scanner for public use. We would like the scanner to be a standalone unit and have the ability to send the scanned documents to
a flash, email account or Google Docs. It would be good if the scanner also had a print option. We looked at CCP Solutions standalone scanner and were very impressed
at its ease of use and compact design--the public loved it as well--but my Board wants us to do more research before purchasing anything.

If you have some names of vendors or experiences to share with me, I will summarize all info for the group. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,
Janet Fine
