METADATA and CATALOGUING LIBRARIAN
 
The UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA LIBRARIES, with a long tradition of service
excellence to the University and its communities, seek a dynamic individual
for the position of Metadata and Cataloguing Librarian.
If you are a creative and energetic librarian who would thrive as part of a
team tasked with monitoring, evaluating, recommending and applying both
established and emerging metadata schemes to information resources, and
providing expertise and leadership in policy development relating to
metadata, then we are looking for you!
 
Your RESPONSIBILITIES will be many and varied, including:
 
€ Providing metadata for, and cataloguing and classification of materials in
various formats € Monitoring developments in metadata standards and
supporting technologies; analyzing, designing, implementing, and evaluating
metadata schemes for resources on library digitization projects €
Evaluating, selecting or designing tools to support metadata creation,
harvesting and migration € Acting as a system-wide resource and providing
staff training and awareness relating to the creation and use of catalogue
records and other metadata € Collaborating in the development and
application of techniques and measurements to assess the effectiveness of
traditional and emerging metadata in meeting user needs € Liaising with
consortial partners and other campus groups, including collaborating on
projects € Participating in regional, national and international initiatives
to promote shared development and use of metadata and its standards and
practices
 
There may also be opportunities for providing reference, collection
management, and/or liaison services.
 
Your QUALIFICATIONS will include:
 
€ A Masters in Library Science degree from an accredited library school €
Substantial experience with AACR, LCSH, LC classification, MARC21, and
library automated systems € Experience with emerging metadata schemes such
as RDA, Dublin Core, MODS, MADS, METS, EAD, TEI, MARCXML and RDF € Knowledge
of authority control systems, serials or digital resources cataloguing € A
strong service orientation and the ability to work independently and as a
team member in a dynamic environment € Strong communication and
organizational skills € An aptitude for complex, analytical work with
attention to detail, and an interest in problem-solving € Flexibility and
the ability to prioritize work to ensure departmental and Library goals are
realized € Ability to work effectively in a production-oriented environment
€ An interest in seeking opportunities for conducting research and
professional involvement
 
Knowledge of one or more languages other than English is desirable.
 
The University of Alberta Libraries is Canada's second largest research
library, with a collection exceeding seven million titles and ten million
volumes.  The Libraries has a unique relationship with the broader community
through NEOS, a central Alberta consortium consisting of 18 government,
hospital, college and university libraries and through The Alberta Library.
The Libraries also has a partnership with OCLC for cataloguing of materials.

This tenure-track position is classified at the Librarian I level with a
salary range of $55,770 - $111,458. Librarians at the University of Alberta
have academic status and participate in a generous benefits program.
