I have had very good luck with hostgator.com over the past 7 or 8 years.

First off read host reviews at http://www.webhostingtalk.com. Then when
you have your short list, email each of the companies with questions,
see how fast they reply and the quality of the responses. Get on the
host support forum and see what kind of conversation is occurring.

I have used hostgator.com and hostpc.com for most of my sites. I have
helped others that use bluehost and heard good comments. I had sites at
dreamhost for quite a while but the sites got really slow, so that is
when I moved to hostgator. I work with one site on dreamhost for
someone else and have not seen the slowness.

All my experience has been with shared hosting accounts not virtual
hosting or dedicated servers. I am happy with both hostgator and
hostpc. But might try bluehost for my next hosting account.

Also consider the control panel offered at the host. Cpanel is the
industry standard (hostgator and blue host use it). Other choices
include DirectAdmin (hostpc), plesk(????), and proprietary (dreamhost).
