[Web4lib] LibX and Conduit

From Godmar Back (LibX) --

We're aware of Conduit - their CEO called us once to ask us if we want to merge the projects.

From our point of view, the key differences are:

- Conduit is a commercial product, LibX is open source
- Conduit has more resources (developers, etc.) than LibX
- Conduit takes kitchen sink approach, the more the better - LibX is more focused.
- Conduit does not allow page customization (cues, linking, etc.)
- Conduit requires that the Google search box/toolbar from which they derive their revenue is visible - LibX does not require a Google
search box and in fact in LibX 2.0, we're deemphasizing the toolbar altogether.

Feel free to forward this to web4lib.

Dear Sandy,
Our library is using Conduit as library toolbars for years now.
<http://www.rug.nl/bibliotheek/locaties/bibCMB/informatie/toolbox/InYourBrowser><http://www.rug.nl/bibliotheek/locaties/bibCMB/informatie/toolbox/InYourBrowser>http://www.rug.nl/bibliotheek/locaties/bibCMB/informatie/toolbox/InYourBrowser
Conduit allows
- complete free customization,
- grouping of toolbars ( language version or departments, install one, get many)
- supports post & get search queries,
- many choice in button, menu options
- xml menu's hosted locally
- gadgets and widgets, even html copy&paste creation
- and much more
Over the years we have derived from the toolbars:
- netvibes. & widgetbox widgets & searchboxes
- Google toolbars button components
- browser searchbox plugins
-Extensions for Chrome via Conduit marketplace etc
Users can customize their library toolbars in almost unlimited ways. In my post i list some:
<http://digicmb.blogspot.com/2009/10/37-ways-to-adjust-your-library-toolbar.html><http://digicmb.blogspot.com/2009/10/37-ways-to-adjust-your-library-toolbar.html>http://digicmb.blogspot.com/2009/10/37-ways-to-adjust-your-library-toolbar.html
Recently it is also possible to create, publish, and share seperate "apps" from the toolbar, for instance a gadget, searchbox, or rss- menu's.

I have created various external toolbars, like the Pubmed & NLM toolbars
<http://nlmtoolbars.blogspot.com/><http://nlmtoolbars.blogspot.com/>http://nlmtoolbars.blogspot.com/
So, yes i like Conduit, no, i do not have any ties to the company -:)
If you have any questions, i am happy to adress them.
I will follow the discussion closely.

Our library is thinking about going with the LibX toolbar. Would love to hear pro/con thoughts from any libraries currently using LibX. Would also be interested in hearing from any libraries using a different product.

Thanks!

Sandy
