Assistant Dean for Technical Services and Library Systems

The College of Charleston Libraries seek an innovative leader to serve
as the Assistant Dean for Technical Services and Library Systems. The
successful candidate should have several years of progressively
responsible experience managing a collection development or cataloging
department as well as experience managing library systems. The library
seeks a leader with a keen sense of the evolving role of academic
libraries. The position requires someone with strong analytical,
budgeting and decision making skills, and an ability to achieve results
by motivating staff and colleagues. A record of professional
participation, knowledge of issues and trends, and the ability to
represent the library at all levels is essential. A member of the senior
management team, the Assistant Dean reports to the Dean of Libraries.

Responsibilities and Duties

Managing and Budgeting (25%)

    * Manages cataloging, collection development, and systems
departments, comprised of 4 librarians, 10 full-time staff, and 20
student workers.
    * Sets annual objectives and evaluates the performance of each
department head.
    * Working with Head of Collection Development department, manages
$2.6 million materials budget.
    * Working with Head of Systems department, manages $200,000
technology budget.

Collection Development and Cataloging (40%)

    * Plans and leads implementation of traditional and digital services
in cataloging, acquisitions, serials management, electronic resources
licensing, and collection management.
    * Represents library in a range of consortia and partnerships at
state, regional, and national levels.

Library Systems (25%)

    * Supervises the acquisition, implementation, maintenance, and
upgrade of software and hardware platforms in support of library
functions including the Innovative Interfaces library management system,
the CONTENTdm digital library software, the ILLiad resource sharing
system, and the EZProxy remote access server. 
    * Collaborates with library faculty and staff in planning and
implementation of digital initiatives and web applications.
    * Maintains liaison with IT and other campus units.

Library and College Affairs (10%)

    * In absence of the Dean, serves as his/her representative. 
    * Serves as library liaison to academic departments.
    * Undertakes research and/or professional development related to
professional and scholarly interests.
    * Serves on library, college, and professional committees, elected
and assigned.

Minimum Requirements

    * Graduate degree in librarianship from ALA-accredited institution.
    * Three years of experience managing a technical services
department.
    * Three years of progressively responsible experience managing an
integrated library system.
    * Five years of supervisory experience including hiring, training,
and evaluating librarians and library staff.
    * Experience with budgeting, planning, and project management (Note:
Experience may be concurrent).
    * Demonstrated proficiency in digital technologies, applications,
and reporting tools.

Preferred Qualifications

    * Experience with Innovative Interfaces' Millennium system, OCLC's
ILLiad system, ERes, EZProxy, and library digitization projects.
    * Knowledge of web technologies and library information technology
standards and protocols.

Salary and Benefits

Compensation and rank are commensurate with experience. The salary range
begins at $75,000 and includes benefits package. The position is full
time, tenure track appointment. Benefits: State holidays (approximately
12 per year), paid sick leave and vacation, contribution towards moving
expenses, health insurance, dental insurance, optional 401K, 457 and
403B supplemental retirement accounts, and a variety of optional
insurance plans including Long Term Disability and Long Term Care.
Retirement options include either the South Carolina Retirement System
or one of the State optional retirement programs.
