[Web4lib] Video repositories beyond Facebook

For those of y'all with Lexis access, they have Blackboard available through their website and, allegedly, offer as much video storage as you'd like. You may want to double check their service agreements and make sure that you retain any applicable copyright. Obviously, this only works in a private environment.

What kind of reporting do you get with the Flash Media Server. One of the things we need to figure out is who has watched the online training videos for staff so we have reporting on who has/has not taken the training.

Hi Rhonda

We've installed a Flash Media Server so we can stream video (rather than
download and play). Copyright reporting is managed with our online reserve
system (Masterfile) but links to content (on the FMS, via Masterfile) are
only visible within Blackboard. We started last semester with a service to
transcode and host moving image from a variety of sources (from
videocassette to 'homemade' digital objects (e.g. Captivate, WMV, MP4,
AVI))as provided by lecturers. At the start of this semester we integrated
lecture capture (via our Tandberg system). Everything is still 'piloty' but
the uptake has been enthusiastic.

Perhaps the most impressive thing about it is the coordination and
cooperation between various parts of the Library, IT, AV/Videoconferencing
and our Teaching & Learning Development people. To the teaching staff it
just a form to fill in and then wait for a link for Blackboard embedding to
be emailed. The processes underneath though are complex.

Here's the form: http://libserver.jcu.edu.au/reserveonline/rovideo.php

We are still developing and refining the system as we go.

Cheers, Alan.

Hi all,

I read with interest about using Facebook to host video tutorials for
North Harris' library. I'm curious what others in academic settings are
doing to meet the demand to host moving images. At our institution,
there's a need to store videos and provide access to others. We use
Blackboard for course management and have limited access to ContentDM
through a contract with our state library. I'd love to hear any
recommendations.

Thanks in advance,

Rhonda
