Web Services Librarian

The University of Colorado Denver Health Sciences Library (HSL) seeks an energetic, innovative, service-oriented Web Services Librarian (WSL). The successful candidate will coordinate, develop and maintain electronic resources for the library. These resources include web resources provided by vendors, the library's web site, the library's intranet, and other electronic resources as required. The WSL works closely with the rest of the IT Unit to administer the library web server(s), and serves as administrator and coordinator for the web interface to the library's web OPAC. The WSL leads the library's internal advisory Web Committee. In addition, the WSL works with the library's Access Services and Information, Research & Outreach departments in troubleshooting end-user access to web resources.

Supervision: Reporting to the library's Head of Information Technology, the WSL supervises one IT staff position, the Web Applications Developer.

Major responsibilities:

    * Designs and maintains library and library catalog web pages. Follows current library best practices in implementing web graphics, page layouts, and site navigation.
    * Coordinates and conducts meetings of an advisory Web Committee for the library.
    * Works with all library departments as well as end users in developing and maintaining the library catalog, serials portal, link resolver, and any new web interfaces (whether such interfaces are obtained externally or developed internally).
    * Ensures and troubleshoots electronic resource access for the library's primary users. Coordinates tracking efforts and informs both end-users and library staff of any ongoing issues or problems. Works with external partners and vendors to provide access and resolve issues with electronic resources and services.
    * Assists with the Alliance Digital Repository and performs administrative duties, as needed.
    * Co-administers and helps create library intranet and other web resources intended for staff use.
    * Co-administers and assists in maintenance of a content management system (CMS) for library employees. Supports and trains staff on the use of this CMS.
    * Helps to create, implement, and explain guidelines for library web content creators.
    * Coordinates and conducts limited usability and accessibility testing of library web pages and electronic library resources. Where possible, coordinates and directs improvements to usability and accessibility.
    * Keeps current with trends and issues relating to web and library technologies.
    * Participates in campus and library committee work.
    * Assists staff members in IT and other units on web-related tasks and projects.

Required:

    * Masters degree in library or information science from a program accredited by the American Library Association or foreign equivalent.
    * Demonstrated experience in web design.
    * Familiarity with standards-based XHTML and CSS.
    * Knowledge of user-centric design methods, including informal usability testing of existing and planned or "beta" web sites.
    * Demonstrated familiarity with one or more of the following: JavaScript, PHP or ASP/.Net.
    * Experience with searching and using vendor-provided library resources on the web.
    * Evidence of troubleshooting and problem-solving ability with web browsers and the Internet.
    * Ability to excel both independently and as a team member on a variety of simultaneous projects in an evolving, dynamic, collaborative environment.
    * Ability to work effectively with diverse individuals throughout the organization.
    * Evidence of excellent organizational, written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred: 

    * Supervisory experience.
    * Experience in an academic or health sciences library.
    * Demonstrated experience in designing and maintaining library web sites.
    * Ability to write concisely and effectively for the web.
    * Demonstrated experience with web server software such as IIS or Apache.
    * Ability to construct SQL queries, or, demonstrated knowledge of at least one of the following relational databases: Oracle, MySQL, MS-SQL.
    * Demonstrated experience with digital media technology and providing access to digitized audio and video.
    * Demonstrated web design experience with Innovative Interfaces' ILS.
    * Administrative experience with online serials services and open URL resolvers.
    * Experience with open source web applications, particularly content management systems.

Salary: 

$48,000 minimum based on qualifications and experience. The University of Colorado offers a full benefits package. Information on University benefits, including eligibility, is located at https://www.cu.edu/pbs. This is a non-tenured track faculty position with rank commensurate with experience.

The UC Denver at Anschutz Medical Campus (AMC) includes the Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, and Public Health, the College of Nursing, the Graduate School, and the University of Colorado Hospital. Located at the crossroads of the AMC and the Colorado Science & Technology Park, this $35 million, state-of-the-art library opened in October 2007. Coordinating and providing access to information in support of learning, research, clinical care and service to the community, the library is the physical and digital hub of knowledge on the campus. The HSL provides the largest collection of health sciences information resources in Colorado with a digital collection of more than 30,000 online journals, hundreds of electronic textbooks, and online databases.
