[Web4lib] Leeding The Way: Educational UTube At Leeds University

Hi Alan,

I can't speak about the technology being used at Leeds, but it seems
that you could create a similar system with some readily available open
source tools.

The main ingredient: FFmpeg (http://ffmpeg.org/)

"FFmpeg is a complete solution to record, convert and stream audio and
video. It includes libavcodec, the leading audio/video codec library.
FFmpeg is developed under Linux, but it can be compiled under most
operating systems, including Windows." You can use this (command line)
tool to convert uploaded videos to the Flash FLV format (the format
being used at Leeds and most video sites) on the server side.

Along with FFmpeg you would likely want a CMS or some sort of
application to manage authentication, page creation, navigation, file
uploads, etc.

Drupal seems to be a popular choice for those purposes on this list, so
here is a Drupal module that works with FFmpeg to do some of the heavy
lifting: http://drupal.org/project/flashvideo

I haven't tried this myself, but I it should be possible.
