Hi Janet,
We currently permit patrons to use their own or library music cds at all of
our public pcs - however, our pcs are also configured to block installation
of software (although pure data discs in common formats are generally
readable). This policy has worked reasonably well up to now, however, there
are some drawbacks, and we are making gradual changes to address them.
One problem has to do with patrons who bring test preparation software for
use on our computers, as many (most?) of these seem to come with their own,
proprietary client apps.
To address this type of problem we're changing our public user profiles to
local admin accounts to permit installation of software. We are already
using deepfreeze, so changes made to the computers are flushed at every
reboot.
