[Web4lib] YouTube and Bandwith

That is why we have ruled out banning it from the Adult and even the
Young Adult profile at this time. I have even looked and found Windows
Server 2003 lessons there which I have watched. It is just the
Children's profile under discussion at this time.

I can certainly understand your dilemma, but it is a bit sad. There is a
lot of age inappropriate stuff on YouTube, but sometimes there are
incredibly cool educational things there too. Try searching "quadratic
equations", for instance, and you'll get dozens of different lessons.
There are entire lectures from Universities available, and tutorials for
all types of computer issues. YouTube has all the diversity of the rest
of the Internet, and that means there are actually real information
resources buried in with all the entertainment. I think the site has the
potential to be a really valuable reference resource in the long term,
and I think that fact is something worth considering in you
deliberations.

Good Luck,

- David

We had a parent complain to us recently when she caught her son watching
strippers on YouTube. Now the debate is whether we should allow YouTube
in the Children's Room. Since we can set up different filter groups and
drop different computers into their appropriate groups, this is under
serious consideration.

Are there any libraries that have blocked the use of YouTube in their
libraries because it uses so much bandwith? Have there been any
repercussions?
