Ken,

Most popular javascript libraries provide capabilities to animate
cross-fades, wipes, etc. A couple of the most popular for this
purpose are probably Script.aculo.us <http://wiki.script.aculo.us/
scriptaculous/show/CombinationEffectsDemo> and Mootools <http://
demos.mootools.net/>. There is a great slideshow script called Smooth
Slide Show <http://smoothslideshow.jondesign.net> based on Mootools
that might be of use to you. Also take a look at Eric Meyer's S5
<http://meyerweb.com/eric/tools/s5/> XHTML slideshow. It doesn't have
built in transitions, but the source could be hacked to use one of
the above-mentioned javascript libraries.

Hope this helps.
