Quills *IS* a plone product.

http://plone.org/products/quills

Do you find wanting in features? Or is simply the lack of "shiny"?

If it is the former it may mean looking for a different Plone
product. I have used Coreblog in the past.

http://coreblog.org/ YMMV.

If it is the latter it may be a simple as customizing the quills
product to make it look less "unappealing".
