It is a Beta version, so some bugs should be expected.

It installs for me (XP SP2) - it just doesn't display any text in any
drop-down or context menus and won't let me enter any URLs. What are
the odds they'd rush a half-baked beta out the door just hours after
Steve Jobs announced writing for Safari was the only "API" for making
iPhone apps?

Public Library Technology Interest Group: Small-MidSized Libraries
Facing Tech Challenges (Discussion/Q&A)
Sunday, June 24

Before you "crash and burn," join discussion leaders Scott Reinhart
(Assistant Director of Operations) and Bob Kuntz (I.T. Manager) from
Carroll County (Maryland) Public Library who will share tips and real
life stories about moving technology forward (no matter what the
starting point). Geared for mid-size to small libraries and library
systems who are struggling with the "next steps" in their technology
development, this session should prove beneficial and offers
opportunities to ask questions in a friendly and informal setting. This
discussion is sponsored by LITA's new Public Library Technology Interest
Group bright and early on Sunday morning, June 24th, 8 - 10 a.m. at the
Convention Center, Room 309.

Scott Reinhart began his career as an elementary school media
specialist. After four years, he "had it" with the public schools. He
directed the University of Baltimore's Instructional Technology Center,
and the Carroll Frederick Audio Visual Cooperative, prior to his current
job as Assistant Director of Operations overseeing "all the cool stuff"
at Carroll County (MD) Public Library. Scott was the lead person for
the implementation of the MPower statewide card and is helping with the
development and testing of the new Marina upgrade. Current
responsibilities include IT, facilities, technical services, vehicles,
delivery, etc.

Hi Lawrence - Are you embedding the audio files or creating ActionScript
links to them? I haven't tried it and I could be wrong, but I would
assume that if you used ActionScript to play an external file rather
than embedding it within Flash, then it wouldn't have the compression
problems that it sounds like you are having. The Flash book I have uses
this code (place the file in the same folder and place the code in the
frame where you want the sound to start playing - the "true" tells it to
start playing right away rather than waiting for it to download entirely
first):

  my_sound = new Sound();
  my_sound.loadSound("music.mp3", true);

We've been recording podcasts for some time now, and currently offer
them on this page:

http://www2.morainevalley.edu/default.asp?SiteId=10&PageId=1356

What we would like to do is embed a flash player in that page so that
users can listen to the MP3s without either leaving the page or
downloading the MP3s to their machines. Unfortunately, unless we encode
the MP3s using settings that result in *huge* files, the podcast
speakers sound like chipmunks when played back through flash (they
sound fine using any other playback method). Any suggestions? We're
using Adobe Audition to create the MP3s. I looked in the archives but
couldn't find anything.

Thanks!

I have Safari (build 522.11.3) installed on Windows XP2 (desktop) and
Windows Vista Business Version (laptop). There are a few bugs, but
nothing that causes any errors or freezes. As someone else wrote, it's
a beta (or maybe it's a perpetual beta??)

I like the browser, but I think--correct me if I am wrong here--I seem
to recall Mac users complain about Safari, about Safari not being up
to par with other user-friendly, Mac apps.

I use Safari as my daily browser of choice, and it has the nicest text
rendering system I have ever seen in a browser. It's certainly a
first-class
browser.

David -
I second Andrew.

There were problems initially--ages ago. I use it all the time too on
my Mac OS X system. Since I require students in my Web development
classes to make sure their Web pages display in browsers on both
Windows and Mac OS X platforms, I am happy to see Safari being ported
to Windows XP and Vista. It eliminates having to set up accounts for
them in Browsercam (browsercam.com) and teaching them how to use it.

I have found that Safari on the Mac (which I work on for Web
development) often has the same problems in display that are in IE 7,
and thus I don't need to immediately test new/changed pages in IE. I
can get things to display properly in Safari and usually (not 100% of
the time) it looks the same in IE 7.

For the Windows world, the arrival of Safari is a good thing, I think.
Safari should keep both Firefox and IE on their toes.

Speaking of testing websites in other browsers, I have had fair to
good results with a website called browsershots.org. You submit your
URL to a queue and in 20-30 minutes screenshots are taken of your site
appearing on various browsers running on different operating systems.

For an article I'm writing about LOCKSS (Lots Of Copies Keep Stuff
Safe),
I'd like to hear from libraries and consortia that are either using
LOCKSS
or made a decision not to use LOCKSS. Please contact me any time in June
2007 (the earlier, the better). CLOCKSS users also welcome.

Not sure what LOCKSS is? See this site: http://www.lockss.org/

What
Social networking services such as YouTube, the Facebook, flickr, text
messaging, and podcasting are second nature to youth, who integrate
these technologies into daily life in unexpected ways. Bibliophiles
tag and share their favorite books on LibraryThing, while librarians
communicate using blogs and wikis such as Library Success. Our
experienced panel will discuss this rapidly growing phenomenon and
present examples of innovative outreach and reference services that
utilize social software such as tagging, blogging and wikis to reach
online users.
