The award winning Consortium Library at the University of Alaska
Anchorage is recruiting for the position of department head for the
Instruction and Reference Services Department.   With two new library
classrooms in a new library facility, attendance in library instruction
sessions has grown by 70% during the last two years.  Two goals for the
library are to expand its course offerings and to enhance its web-based
instruction.    This position reports to the Dean of the Consortium
Library, supervises 8 librarians and coordinates the reference desk
schedule for approximately 20 librarians.

Position Responsibilities

*	Participate in the management of the library. 
*	Manage the Instruction and Reference Services Department.
*	Coordinate library instruction activities.
*	Lead in the planning and development of innovative library
instructional activities for semester long classes, faculty and student
workshops, course-related sessions, and competency based certificate
programs.  
*	Develop and administer effective outreach and publicity for
instructional activities.
*	Work with library faculty to create print and web-based
instructional materials.
*	Provide reference assistance which may include night and weekend
rotation.
*	Oversee reference desk schedule and e-reference services.    
*	Serve as collection development liaison in assigned subject
areas. 

Located near the Chugach Mountains in Alaska's largest city (population:
270,000), the library serves both the University of Alaska Anchorage
(UAA) , with 14,000 students, and Alaska Pacific University (APU), a
private institution with 500 students. From UAA's fully networked
campus, the library delivers its digitally enriched services to the UAA
and APU communities.  The library's Health Sciences Information Service
offers a full range of library services to the medical community across
the state.   The Consortium Library has more than 780,000 bound volumes
and subscribes to more than 3,400 journals. The library licenses over
190 databases and provides web access to the full text from more than
20,000 journals and ebooks.  The library is fully engaged in statewide
programs and supports a regional OPAC with the Anchorage public library.
It is a founding member of the Alaska Resources Library and Information
Services and Alaska's Digital Archives. It is a designated Foundation
Center and a selective federal depository.  There are 18 FTE faculty
positions and 27 FTE staff positions.  The Library's operating budget is
approximately $4.3M.
 
UAA is a comprehensive metropolitan university consisting of the main
campus in Anchorage, three community campuses, and additional sites in
rural communities and on military installations. UAA offers certificate,
associate, baccalaureate, and masters programs in the arts, humanities,
sciences, and professions.  There is a new Ph.D. program in Psychology.



REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

- ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent.
- Current reference experience.
- Current library instruction experience. 
- Demonstrated knowledge of current library instruction theory and
practice.
- Experience with web-based library instruction.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and work collaboratively in teams.
- Management and supervisory experience. 
- Strong outreach and user service commitment.  
- Effective communication skills.
  

SALARY:   $65,000 minimum
9 plus 3 month contract
