WEB PROGRAMMER 


 


The Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library is seeking applications for
a positive, knowledgeable cutting-edge and creative WEB PROGRAMMER. 


 


If you are looking to make a change and are creative, like to take risks
and want to work at a place full of opportunity and excitement this is
the place for you!  The Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library is
developing a Digital Branch to serve its customers in the digital age,
and have formed a Digital Branch Team to meet that goal. The first goal
is to hire a Web Programmer to build what's in our collective heads. The
ideal candidate is one who lives by code, loves PHP and MySQl and
interested in cutting edge technologies like AJAX and Ruby on Rails.
This programmer will work with our Digital Branch Team to design, code,
test, and bring online these new services, many with a high "wow, cool,
nobody else is doing this!" factor.  


 


The Web Programmer reports to the Digital Branch and Services Manager.
The required qualifications include: A bachelor's degree plus 2 years of
relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and
experience.  Expert skills in HTML/XHTML, creating and manipulating CSS
Layouts, XML, RSS, and AJAX, a thorough knowledge of
PHP/MySQL/JavaScript/Lamp and other ODBC database skills also useful (MS
SQL especially). Must enjoy playing with APIs (i.e., Google, Amazon,
Flickr, etc APIs) to integrate other services with our Website. Eat,
breathe and sleep the Web.  Candidates will be asked which RSS
feeds/blogs they read. Must have large Website experience with an
understanding of scaling issues and excellent interpersonal and creative
problem-solving skills. Must have the ability to adapt in fast-changing
environments, willingness to take risks and consider new and untested
approaches. Exceptional written and oral communication skills in
English, including experience in public speaking. A pre-and/or
post-employment drug screen, a criminal history record check, and
physical capacity testing are required as a condition of employment.  


 


Desired qualifications include:  Library experience, especially in a
public library. Some ASP and .Net experience is desired. Design
experience is helpful, but not necessary. Knowledge of one or more
languages in addition to English is highly desirable. 


 


Topeka, the Capital City of Kansas, is located on I-70 linking Kansas
City, Missouri (70 miles east); the University of Kansas-Lawrence (20
miles east); Kansas State University-Manhattan (50 miles west); and
Washburn University. Topeka has a stable economy and excellent housing
at affordable costs.


 


The starting salary range is $44,348 to $53,217 a year, DOE. Excellent
benefits, including BCBS health/dental at a nominal cost to the
employee, retirement through KPERS, and a cafeteria plan, with 22 days
vacation and 12 days sick leave.
