You need to create a 16x16 icon in .ico format.  Either place it in your
server's document root or reference another location for it with a META
tag; a search for favicon.ico on your search engine of choice will churn
up the gory details.

Note that this "feature" is specific to IE, and that not a few webmasters
consider it one of the most misbegotten ideas in browser history.  Check
the 404's in your access_log to understand why.
