Tom,

This is just my experience, but I almost never stop the device before I
remove my USB flash drive from either of my laptops, and I have had no
trouble at all with either the flash drive or the computers.

I would also be interested if anyone has any experiences of equipment
damage - eith to the USB drive or the PC - from removing the USB drive
from the port without first stopping it.
