TITLE:      Systems Librarian
LOCATION:   University of Washington Libraries, Information Technology
Services

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Under the general direction of the Associate Director of Libraries for
Information Technology Services (ITS), serves as a Systems Librarian
providing support for the planning, development, and implementation of
the Libraries' distributed computing environment.

The Libraries' current computing environment includes an Innovative
Interfaces integrated library system, 800 public and staff workstations
running Windows 2000/XP, a 2TB Dell/EMC storage area network, and
20clustered and standalone servers providing file, web, and database
services to users across the University of Washington campus. The
Libraries is in the process of moving most major services from Windows
to Linux servers.

ITS' responsibilities includes support for technical areas of the III
system, desktop computing support, systems management of the Libraries'
server environment, some web application development, and the
coordination of usability testing. In addition to this position, ITS
staff includes three librarians, five technical staff, a help desk
coordinator, a Graduate Staff Assistant, and several student helpdesk
technicians. This position may be assigned to projects in any of these
areas and will take a leadership position in some of them.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Oversees the operation of the Libraries' server and storage environment;
plans for system upgrades and maintenance; works with ITS Senior
Computer Specialists to develop and maintain server/storage/network
operating policies and procedures; identifies training needs and
opportunities as appropriate.

Participates in the planning and implementation of electronic
information services to the staff and public. This will include the
management of major systems projects from needs analysis and initial
planning through deployment, and will sometimes include programming.

Shares operational support for technical areas of the III system with
the Head, Integrated Library Systems, and works to integrate III with
other information systems.

Participates in overall technology planning for Information Technology
Services.
May participate in staff or user education programs.

Participates in Libraries-wide committees, task forces, and teams as
appropriate.

Assumes other responsibilities as assigned; performs other duties as
required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library
Association or an equivalent graduate library science/information
studies degree.

2. Demonstrated experience working successfully in a complex
information technology environment.

3. Good oral and written communication skills.

4. Demonstrated user-centered service philosophy and proven ability to
work with both technical and non-technical people.

5. Demonstrated technical skills sufficient to carry out the
responsibilities of the position.

6. Ability to quickly learn and apply new technologies.

7. Ability to work well in a team-oriented environment.

SALARY:

$47,000 minimum.  Starting salary to be commensurate with qualifications and
experience.

BENEFITS:

Librarians are academic personnel and participate in the University of
Washington Retirement Plan (TIAA-CREF, The Vanguard Group, and/or
Fidelity Investments) on a matching basis. Vacation is accrued at the
rate of 24 working days per year; sick leave at the rate of 12 working
days per year. Excellent medical, dental and life insurance plans. No
state or local income tax.
