[WEB4LIB] student content on library web site

Piper,

I had planned on implementing this on a new acquisitions list when I was
at Emory. I wasn't planning on it being moderated (the
students/faculty/staff would have to log in, so their identity would be
known). I'm not sure how extensively it would have been used or the
quality of the comments, but that wasn't really my concern. I sort of
pictured it being used in other ways than just reviews ("D00D, IT
TOTALLY HAS THE ANSWERS TO TEST #3", "If you're looking for this book,
it's actually on the stacks on the other end of the floor", "I would
also recommend the Atlantic Monthly article about this particular
author", etc.)

I'm very interested in user-supplied contribution to library services.
In my opinion, the more user contribution that you can implement, the
more stake the users have in the services.

-Ross.

One of our reference and instruction librarians proposed adding student comments on search engines, databases, or quick reference resources to the informational database connect pages on our site. These comments would be similar to amazon.com book reviews, IMDB comments, and the like and would serve basically the same purpose; that is, letting other undergraduates know how good or otherwise they found a given resource to be for searching, emailing articles, etc. They would be filtered through the librarian who proposed this idea in that he would assign these reviews in his library research class, read them, and then upload them to the server himself.
