(2 Positions Available)

POSITION: Computer Systems Administrator II

DESCRIPTION: Provides technology and computer support for the 
Vanderbilt Library. The major areas of responsibility include 
maintaining and assisting in the enhancement of the interfaces to 
web-enabled database applications (currently implemented in perl) 
and updating the library's networked cdrom-based database products. 
This position also assists in configuring and installing support 
components for these products on public workstations (Windows 
2000/XP Professional). This position will also provide first line 
backup for unix system administration. Other duties and assignments 
will be negotiated based on the successful candidate's expertise, 
team needs, and library priorities.

QUALIFICATIONS: Required for this position are: a Bachelor's degree 
plus two years' full time technical support experience; excellent 
communications and organizational skills, ability to learn new 
technical skills quickly, ability to meet deadlines; customer 
service-oriented with ability to work effectively with computer 
users at all levels of technical competence; ability to work 
flexibly and collaboratively within a team composed of librarians 
and library technology professionals; experience working in a 
higher education, research organization, or library environment; 
strong problem-solving and analytical skills; unix system 
administration experience; two years' database programming 
experience with sql, perl, php, or Java (Windows NT/2000 or Unix 
platforms); knowledge of object-oriented analysis and design; 
working knowledge of MS Windows 2000/XP Professional workstation. 
Experience providing technology support for libraries and a B.S or 
M.S. in Computer Science, or MLS would be preferred.


POSITION: Computer Systems Administrator II/Systems Librarian

DESCRIPTION: The ACORN Support Administrator provides general 
technology and computer support for the Vanderbilt Library as a 
member of the Library Information Technology Services Team and 
reports to the team leader. The specific major area of 
responsibility is the configuration of, implementation of, 
troubleshooting for, and training on the circulation and technical 
services functions of the Library's UNIX-based client/server 
automated library system application. The person in this position 
must have a thorough understanding of the technical elements 
underlying the system's operation and of the network and client 
software that permits this system to function optimally; s/he must 
work with the library's and vendor's programming staff in 
supporting the system. At the same time, s/he must be able to work 
effectively with library staff members representing a wide range of 
technical competence. Other duties and assignments will be 
determined based on the individual's expertise, team needs, and 
direction from the Library.

QUALIFICATIONS: Required for this position are: a Bachelor's degree 
and two years experience providing technology support; excellent 
communications, teaching, and organizational skills; 
user-orientation with ability to work effectively with users at all 
levels of technical competence; ability to work flexibly and 
collaboratively within a team composed of other librarians and 
library technology professionals; experience working in a higher 
education, research organization, or library environment; basic 
system software administration experience; working knowledge of PC 
and peripherals. An MLS, library public services experience, 
experience with SIRSI Unicorn and Unicorn API, and experience with 
PERL and/or other scripting languages are preferred.


ENVIRONMENT: Vanderbilt University consists of ten schools and 
colleges with an enrollment of 10,000. The university is served by 
The Jean and Alexander Heard Library, which has a collection of 
over 2.9 million volumes and a staff of 218. The total operating 
budget is over $20 million, and the materials budget totals over $8 
million. Vanderbilt is a member of the Association of Research 
Libraries and Solinet. The library is highly automated with an 
online system based on Sirsi software. Library Information 
Technology Services is a team-based unit. The team works 
collaboratively with the libraries to facilitate effective 
computing and provide leadership in the design, development, 
implementation and maintenance of technology services for library 
users.

COMPENSATION: Salary negotiable ($37,440 minimum). Benefits are 
those applicable to exempt employees of Vanderbilt University,
