Actually, I looked at the cost of living of Prescott, AZ versus
Berkeley, CA as examples, and the feedback from this search was that
$36,000 in Prescott is worth $64,000 in Berkeley. I also took the
liberty of comparing Prescott to Washington, DC. Here the difference
was $36,000 in Prescott, AZ is worth $56,000 in Washington, DC - not
fabulous but not too shabby either.

This was all from www.homefair.com (click on Salary Calculator).

The lesson I took from this? DC is definitely cheaper to live in than
Berkeley, although Berkeley has better weather. :-)

Amusedly written on a Friday afternoon just before a holiday.

I don't think the cost of living discrepancy between Arizona and So.
Cal
is a factor of 5.5. The difference between housing in San Francisco
and
parts of Arizona might be that great, but not overall cost of living.
