Email Services

I am trying to find out if libraries are using email servers in-house, if 
they can access their email from any computer, and what particular software 
they are using.  My director has just asked me to research the possibility 
of using a more robust email service, so that staff can check their email 
from anywhere.  I know that Microsoft Exchange and Novell GroupWise are 
well known for this.  Can anyone recommend something else or endorse either 
product?
