My apologies to all. The first critical line of the of my last message was
lost:

After one year in the making and nearly four years since the project's
inception, Avanti MicroLCS version 1.0 WILL BE RELEASED on 14 January 2003.
The release will be made available at the project website,
http://www.avantilibrarysystems.com .

This long awaited first production release establishes the framework and key
elements of the Avanti library computing system in a readily usable package.
It includes basic cataloging and OPAC functions along with the beginnings of
a hyperlinked object database that is suitable for storing and retrieving
unstructured data. The circulation component, to be made fully functional
in a later release, is disabled in version 1.0, but programmers can access
it through the API. Avanti MicroLCS is a compact, completely self contained
client-server library system written from scratch entirely in Java. It
should work on any computer that runs Java, regardless of operating system.

This release contains full documentation for the end user and programmer.
It includes a user manual, installation instructions, API reference, and a
technical overview of the system. The documentation has been written with a
thoroughness and completeness unusual in a first production release of an
open source product.

Avanti MicroLCS has been developed with a "no compromises" approach to
design and quality. User interfaces, both graphical and text based, have
been carefully designed with overall simplicity and ease of use as key
objectives. The product embodies a philosophy of innovation, quality, and
elegance; that in order to be effective, software should be easy to use as
well as powerful.

Avanti MicroLCS is a new kind of library system that pushes the envelope of
library computing. By taking a general approach and reducing the problem to
its essence, the system has a simplicity and flexibility not found in any
other library system, open source or commercial. Although targeted for
small libraries, Avanti MicroLCS is a very general tool that should be
useful in a broad range of libraries.

The project website, lagging pretty far behind right now from what's
happening, will be fully updated upon the upcoming release. Stay tuned for
the product release at the project website,
http://www.avantilibrarysystems.com .
