SCIENCE LIBRARIAN for CHEMISTRY 
and MATHEMATICS
Under the general direction of the Head of the Reference Department and
working closely with the coordinators for Collection Development and Library
Instruction, this Librarian is responsible for participating in the
provision of general reference and library instruction as well as collection
development, reference services and instructional services in Chemistry and
Mathematics. This position has the following duties:
Reference Services
Shares responsibility for reference service to students, faculty and the
general public at the Reference Desk. Schedule includes some evening and
weekend assignments.
Assists library users with complex reference questions and serves as a
subject specialist in the areas of Chemistry and Mathematics.
Assesses and anticipates information needs and evaluates effective ways of
meeting them. Identifies, interprets, and provides access to information
resources in all formats for all disciplines.
Teaches students, faculty and the general public to use print and electronic
resources including bibliographic, full-text, image-based CD-ROM or Web
databases in the networked environment.
Maintains regular contact with faculty and students to ascertain their
information and research needs and to keep them aware of the development of
collections and services in Chemistry and Mathematics.
Assists with the development, integration, and maintenance of the Reference
Department's Web-based subject guides and electronic reference resources.
Instructional Services
Develops and delivers instructional presentations and tools for users.
Incorporates appropriate electronic applications to create course specific
handouts, annotated bibliographies, and instructional guides to facilitate
library instruction and independent research in areas of subject
specialization.
Provides general and discipline specific instruction to classes on library
research methods and materials. Works with classroom faculty to integrate
information competencies into course assignments. Schedules appointments
with students to offer research assistance as necessary. Shares the
responsibility for the Library's general instruction program and assists in
instruction in other disciplines as needed.
Serves as a resource with the instructional faculty teaching courses related
to Chemistry and Mathematics to provide library instruction in these
specific disciplines.
Provides outreach services to students, faculty, and organizations on
campus.
Collection Development
Serves as the subject specialist and liaison for the Chemistry and
Mathematics Departments and works closely with faculty in the related
academic programs. Responsible for the development and management of
collections, which support the university curriculum in areas of
specialization.
Manages materials budget within areas of specialization. Works closely with
other library faculty in areas of science and engineering.
Engages in ongoing assessment of collections, including the electronic
resources, to support selection and de-selection decisions. Provides
collection evaluation and assessment for university program reviews and
justification of new curricula.
Assists in conducting cost/benefit analysis of the Library's electronic
collections in sciences (databases, e-journals and e-books, etc.) and
preliminary reviews of license agreements. Shares responsibility for
selecting electronic collections.
Other Responsibilities
Assists in the establishment of library policies and procedures by active
participation in departmental and library affairs.
Contributes to departmental, library, campus and professional meetings as
appropriate.
Responsibilities as a Library Faculty Member
Scholarly or creative achievement, contributions to the Library and the
University, professional development, and contributions to the community are
all responsibilities of Library Faculty. Refer to the Library ARTP policy
for complete information.
Minimum Qualifications
1. M.L.S. from an ALA accredited institution or equivalent international
degree [must be completed by appointment date] 
2. A degree or significant academic preparation in chemistry
3. Demonstrated ability to provide reference service
4. Demonstrated skill in using electronic and print information resources in
chemistry and other scientific disciplines
5. Knowledge of chemistry collection development
6. Demonstrated ability to provide library instruction
7. Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work with faculty and
students in a culturally diverse environment
8. Effective oral and written communication skills
9. Ability to work effectively in a team and independently
Preferred Qualifications
1. Graduate Degree or graduate level academic preparation in chemistry or
closely related discipline 
2. A degree or significant academic preparation in mathematics
3. Experience in science/technology reference in an academic, research,
public or technical library
4. Experience with instructional design, including the preparation, delivery
and evaluation of effective library instruction
5. Experience with web page development, course management software,
presentation software and other computer applications
6. Experience conducting cost/benefit analysis of electronic collections in
the sciences
7. Familiarity with current trends and issues in library technology and
scientific information resources
Anticipated Starting Date: April 1, 2002
Appointment:
This is a probationary, twelve-month, tenure-track, entry-level position at
the Senior Assistant Librarian rank, salary range: $48,156.00 - $60, 852.
Librarians have full faculty status and excellent benefits. Library faculty
must demonstrate professional competence, scholarly or creative achievement
and service to the University and community in order to meet university
requirements for tenure and promotion.
