I have done it in test, and Oakland University in MI did
it in a bigger way. Works quite well. Actually
another option is to just use base linux workstations,
configured as public terminals. Jim Willis put together
software (http://sjwillis.tzo.com/comp/lil/) that works
on top of a base redhat 6.2 installation. It adds a user
account, and configures the windowing system and netscape
for public access. We use this and we also then ghost
an image of the system. We configure printing to our
NT-based Uniprint print metering system and use dhcp
for our ip addresses. If something goes wrong we just boot
from floppy and reimage the system. Takes about 10-15 minutes over
the net, would be faster if you put the image on cdrom.
The pc's are 64MB 133mhz pentiums. They work pretty well for
basic web browsing, though I would like a newer browser. Maybe
Mozilla soon.

It sounds perfect for public use. I wish we could do something
like that here, but our tech guys have seen Windows 95 Network
booting and apparently it is really, really slow. Because of
this they are automatically turned off by the idea.

I would like to hear about people's experience with performance
and ease of setup for the Linux (and Unix) Illiterate.
