Although experienced information professionals may empathize with Bill's
comments, we must also remember that meetings are an opportunity for
"novices" to get a foothold on the topics being presented. Obviously, it's
great when something cutting-edge is presented, but many attendees may be
desiring a learning experience on a more basic level.

I also just returned from Computers in Libraries where I moderated and
presented in the Wireless Track. It was my first real national conference
(except for ASIS in 1984 in Philadelphia). The catch words at this year's
conference include Wireless, XML, digital resources, and knowledge
management. I do believe it was one of the best conferences I have ever
attended. While I was in the wireless sessions most of Thursday, I did
get a chance to attend other sessions on Wednesday and Friday. I learned a
great deal while a couple of sessions were guilty of what I call the DUH!
effect. I sat there going DUH! isn't that obvious? It continues to amaze
me that at every conference I go to or almost every library oriented journal
I open there is always at least one session or article that clearly states
the obvious. I won't name names in order to protect those that don't get
it. My own presentation can be found at:

The best part of CIL was networking face to face with other librarians. I
had a very pleasant meal with several people that are members of this list
and met many others in the real world that I had known in the virtual
libraryland for many years.
