Position Description:  AHEC Digital Library Developer (UNC position

Department Mission:
The Library Systems Department enables the Health Sciences Library to
apply technology in innovative ways to create, deliver, evaluate, and
improve library
services that meet staff and users' needs. The Department provides
leadership in securing the
information, technical expertise, collaborative relationships, and
equipment needed to enhance
the library's use of information technology and in planning its services

and support.

Primary Purpose of Position:
Develop, document, deploy, maintain, and troubleshoot the AHEC Digital
Library (ADL), a database-driven, Web-based collection of resources
accessible to
account-holding health care practitioners, preceptors, and students
throughout North Carolina.

Duration of Position:
Two years (April, 2001-June, 2003)

Principal Functions:
1.  maintain the current ADL (as of April, 2001), as previously
developed and deployed
* create ColdFusion-driven utilities, as described by ADL Project
Manager and AHEC
* assume primary responsibility for data export, including generating
statistical and other
reports (with support from HSL Web Manager)
* other maintenance functions as assigned

2.  develop next major ADL release
* migrate ADL's databases from Access to SQL
* develop and implement new interfaces (including XHTML and graphics)
and utilities, as described by ADL Project Manager and AHEC
* document all development activities
* other development functions as assigned (see above)

Organizational Relationship:
Reports to Library Systems Operation Manager.  Works directly and meets
with AHEC staff, and Library Systems staff, to execute ADL production
and maintenance.

Skills, Knowledge, Abilities:
Required
* Database design and development experience (e.g. Microsoft Access and
SQL)
* Web-database middleware development (e.g. ColdFusion)
* Demonstrated problem solving skills
* Working experience in a team environment
* Strong interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills

Desired
* Library work experience
* Health related work experience
* SQL and Microsoft SQL Server experience
* graphics creation experience (e.g. Adobe Photoshop)
