some questions re: image servers

Hi--
I've been looking at information on image servers (thus far, have been 
surfing the net).
Apologies up-front for my techno-ignorance.

I've got a few questions--
 >is it necessary for an imager server to be run in a system with a web 
server?
 >do image servers all run on Unix or can they be run under other operating 
systems?
 >has anyone out there created a database of archival documents they've 
made accessible via an image server (I know Yale has digitized their art 
collection and uses an image server--though I don't have all the details).
