server side include question

Hi. We're using Netscape Server Suite on a UNIX box and want to switch to using server side includes for some of our second level pages. Do these pages have to be in the ssi_includes folder, as my SysAdmin insists, or can they be read from other directories and still work?

Moving all of our files into one directory will collapse our hierarchy unless we resort to some kind of alias/symbolic name.
