No problem...just generate a PNG image with the correct alpha
transparency.  Oh, did you want something that would actually work in
today's browsers? :-(   (Run a recent copy of Mozilla or *Mac* IE 5 over
to http://www.libpng.org/pub/png/png-RedbrushAlpha.html and see how
Thing Are Supposed To Work).

Unfortunately, there's really no other solution to this aside from the
background fakery you describe.
