On the contrary, BBedit is the standard by which all others are judged.
One very handy feature is that it let's you edit directly via an ftp link.
Not as responsive as emacs or vi in this regard, but very nice.

If you're constrained to Windows, Textpad is quite nice and it's
shareware.
