digitizing speech and sound

[Hillary]

Does anyone have a good summary of the technological options for digitizing speech and sound for the Internet?  I am thinking of everything from reel-to-reel tape, cassettes, vinyl records, to compacts discs.  I am researching everything separately, but if someone has done a project in that area, I would be very interested in hearing from you!
