Copyrights and Ebooks

I have a friend who wrote a series of articles for a magazine that was later
turned into a book. The book has been out of print for some years now.
However, she continues to get requests for copies of the book. She would
like to offer the book as an ebook on the internet, but doesn't know what
her rights are to the book she wrote.

How would she find this out? It doesn't sound like there was any kind of
contract or maybe there was and she didn't really know enough to keep it. I
know next to nothing about copyrights and thought that someone on this list
could point me in the right direction.
