	MULTNOMAH COUNTY
	ANNOUNCES A COMPETITIVE EXAMINATION FOR


INTEGRATED LIBRARY SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR

SALARY:	$24.05 - $29.59 per hour	DEADLINE: May 26, 2000

THE POSITION:  The Integrated Library System (ILS) Administrator will be
primarily responsible for the oversight and management of the library's
Integrated Library System application and other databases developed and
purchased by the library.  Duties include:  Provide expert level analysis,
planning, design, and support of the Library's database management system,
and manage the software; act as the primary representative from the
Library to the ILS vendor;  work with library staff to solve problems with
the vendor's software and make changes to the software parameters as
needed; manage the web databases made available to the public; support the
needs of the library staff for the creation and design, or acquisition of
these databases and their installation and maintenance on the library's
web site; and establish technical standards and security for web
databases.

Requires familiarity with the Unix operating environment, preferably Sun's
Solaris, Apache, CGI languages such as Perl and Java, web page development
tools, and web database management tools such as SQL, MYSQL, and Oracle.  
This position reports to the Library's IT Manager. There will be some
shared Unix systems administration duties on the Sun and HP servers using
Solaris and HPUX.

TO QUALIFY:  In order to meet the screening qualifications for this
examination, applicants must have a combination of education and
experience equivalent to that outlined below, plus any other listed
screening qualifications. The following guidelines will be used in
evaluating applications.  Hours less than 40 per week will be prorated.  
Relevant experience may substitute for the required education on a
year-for-year basis.  Relevant education may substitute for experience.  
Post-high school education will be credited on the basis of 30 semester
hours or 45 quarter hours equal one year.

Experience:  Five years of increasingly responsible experience in
information systems and analysis including at least three years of
database management experience and six months of project coordination
experience. Experience in supporting an ILS in a large library is
preferred.

Training:  Equivalent to a Bachelors degree from an accredited college of
university with major course work in computer science or a related field.  
A Masters in Library Science or related field is preferred. The MLS can
substitute for two years of the required experience.

pages of job history information, which are attached to the application
form, must be submitted in the same format as the Employment Application.

2. Responses to Supplemental Application questions, submitted in the
following format: On a separate sheet(s) of paper, type or print your
Name, Social Security Number, and the title of the examination.  Respond
to each of the following examination items individually and completely;
number your responses to correspond with the items; explain or describe
any experience (paid or unpaid) and training related to each item; attach
the separate sheets to your application.

SUPPLEMENTAL APPLICATION QUESTIONS:
Please limit your responses to a total of three single-spaced typed pages.

1. Describe your experience and expertise with library applications and
on-line public access catalogs.

2. Describe your experience and expertise with database management
applications using such tools as Oracle, MYSQL, SQL, Access, etc.

3. Describe your experience and expertise with web servers, web
applications, and databases, including CGI, Perl, Cold Fusion, and related
tools.

4. Describe your experience and expertise with information technology
customer service and support.

5. Describe your experience and expertise with Sun servers, Solaris, HP
servers and HPUX, or other midrange servers.

THE SCREENING AND EXAMINATION PROCESS:  Screening:  Applications will be
screened to determine if applicants meet the minimum qualifications.  All
evidence of meeting the minimum qualifications must be shown on the
standard Multnomah County Employment Application; other application
materials will not be reviewed at this stage of the screening process.

Examination: For those applicants deemed to meet the minimum
qualifications, an evaluation will be done of their training and
experience as shown on their applications and in their responses to the
supplemental application questions.  Based on this evaluation, only the
most qualified applicants will be scheduled for an oral examination.

Placement on the Eligible List: The final examination score and placement
on the eligible list will be based on the oral examination, weighted 100%.

Please note that the application information may be used throughout the
entire screening and examination process.

VETERAN'S PREFERENCE:  If you have been discharged within fifteen years of
the date of this application, or are a disabled veteran, you MAY qualify
for veteran’s preference.  If you feel that you qualify, please submit a
completed Multnomah County Veteran’s Preference form and the required
documentation with your application packet by the required deadline.  
Veteran’s preference cannot be honored for this examination without it.  
Veterans who qualify will be granted five points preference upon
successful completion of all phases of the examination process.  Disabled
veterans who qualify will be granted 10 points.
