Dear Readers:

The OCLC Office of Research recently submitted two research proposals to the
U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF). These proposals arise through
collaborative efforts initiated at the September 1999 ARL/OCLC Keystone
Conference.

The first, "Real-Time Reference for Undergraduate Students in Science,
Mathematics and Engineering," systematically explores issues and solutions
related to the efficient and effective delivery of librarian-assisted
reference services using Web-based, real-time interactive technologies.

The second, "Virtual Online Library for Undergraduates in Mathematics,
Engineering, and Science (VOLUMES)," examines issues and solutions related
to the creation of a database of reference resources through coordinated,
cooperative library effort.

The narrative portions of these proposals are available in PDF format on the
OCLC Institute Home Page (http://www.oclc.org/institute).
